Oil on Panel, 20in x 16in, framed to 23.5in x 27.5in $2000USD
The inspiration for this painting came from my good friend, Susie, who is also the model. I was visiting her home in northern Arizona several months ago and she showed me one of her prized possessions: an authentic buffalo robe, which she treated with great care and reverence.
Buffalo robes were used by many Native American peoples to protect them from the harsh, cold winters so common here in North America. As you might imagine, these robes are extremely heavy but also incredibly warm, especially when worn with the fur toward the wearer's body. Traditional buffalo robes are often decorated with elaborate painting, feathers, and beadwork and are handed down through the generations.
I worked with Susie to create several scenes with her and the buffalo robe. This is the first in what I hope will be a series exploring people of Native descent in both contemporary and traditional settings.
