My favorite time of day is morning, just as the sun rises and bathes the landscape in a warm, golden-colored light.

If you're out on the western ranges at sunrise, you'll be treated to colors that you can't imagine in your wildest dreams. Bright blue or purple shadows set off almost neon yellows or oranges of the grasses and sagebrush. Distant hills might be bright pink or purple, and the sky is a multi-layered conglomeration of pinks and cobalt blue.

I wanted to capture all of these colors of the sunrise in this painting, which is a larger version of "Palomino Sunrise".

This is that same palomino that I found at sunrise, out on the Wyoming ranges near the Flaming Gorge. In the high light of noon this horse appears to be a more traditional palomino coloring (warm tan body with very light mane), but in the morning his coat looked to be made of reds, oranges, and golds. Going much larger allowed me to play with cropping the composition, focusing on the face and mane of this beautiful horse at the same time amping up the colors of reds and oranges. By the way, I have painted this horse before, the painting called "Tangerine Dreams." That painting is now in a private collection in Colorado.
