Each spring in the western USA, wild horses battle each other for dominance and to impress (and win) the ladies. While they try to avoid all-out fighting by displaying their strength in battles of intimidation, sometimes the battle becomes fierce. In this painting, I tried to bring out the bold, rich colors of these horses along with their fire, energy, and personalities.
I approached this painting a little differently. Starting with an underpainting of bold, bright colors such as magenta and orange, I built up layers of ever-darker tones. While this process felt more like an approach to a watercolor painting, it allowed me to use oils in a different, more luminous way in order to capture the complex colors inherent in these horses. I achieved this by using transparent and translucent pigments, and allowing parts of that bright underpainting to show through.
Horses are, to me, the epitome of movement, freedom, and grace. America's wild horses are at the tops of the equine game in my opinion. I enjoy spending hours watching any horses, but particularly those few who are left to roam the range as the last vestiges of the Wild West.
