If you want to experience some truly magical morning and evening light, visit the Texas Hill Country. There is something about the atmosphere there, combined with the rolling hills and dryland vegetation that creates amazing golden glows as the sun is rising or setting.
And if you can get a Texas Longhorn in the mix, all the better.
This painting was inspired by a September sunrise near Fredricksburg, Texas. The colors were real: blues and purples in the darks set off the golden light of the grasses. On the longhorn, turquoise-colored shadows play off orange and pink highlights. Nature isn't really gray, not even on an overcast day, which is why I love scenes like this. Nature allows me to play with color combinations that I could not dream of on my own.
