About this oil:
 
This is a scene out of my imagination, stemming from my love of autumn and life in the western US. Three cowboys head back to the ranch house after a day in the saddle in front of a backdrop of autumn colors. 
 
While intended to be a study for a smaller piece, this mini presented a lot of challenges in its own right. The first was the size -- I am very comfortable painting in larger formats. Having to say everything I wanted to say on an 8x10 in panel meant I needed to keep the details to a minimum. Not an easy feat for someone like me who started her artistic career as a hyper-realist!
 
The next challenge was to keep the background interesting without going overboard with the colors, which would disctact attention from the riders. I did this by keeping those backgroun golds and russets as muted as possible, while also adding variety in to the greens and blues.
