During the winter season in the southwestern US, tens of thousands of Sandhill Cranes gather in wetlands near the Mexican border. As the sun sinks lower toward the western horizon each day, they come in from their feeding areas to roost in ponds and marshlands and as soon as everyone is settled in, the dancing begins.
While we don't exactly know how or why these huge birds dance, after watching them on many occasions it does seem like one of the reasons is plain and simple fun. Usually one bird starts, then its mate joins in. Soon, almost all of the adult birds in the flock are dancing.
Historically, cranes have been a symbol of longevity, prosperity, and romantic love because they partner for life. I'd also like to think it's because they dance with each other on a regular basis ;-)
Sold framed in a gallery-quality gold floater frame.
