About this oil:
In my neighborhood here on the north side of Tucson, we have at least one family of Great Horned Owls living among the mesquite and desert oaks. The female, who I sometimes see in my yard, is probably the largest owl I have personally ever seen...she stands close to 3 ft tall. In the evenings and at night, she hunts in our yards and helps to keep the neighborhood clear of rabbits and other rodents. This little painting is in homage to this beautiful bird.
In lore around the world, owls are thought of as messengers from the Divine Realm, and also as symbols of wisdom. Here in the USA, their symbolism is mixed. Many Navajo and Apache view owls as harbingers of death. Other tribes see owls as protectors, or bringers of insight and vision.
What does the owl symbolize to you?
