About this oil:
The idea for this painting had been floating around in the back of my mind for years. I had seen this beautiful Spanish gelding several years prior and was amazed as his luxurious mane. He seemed to be pretty proud of himself and all of that hair because he was constantly tossing his head around so that his mane became the star attraction for all of the other horses around him. In fact, he reminded me of one of those male models who sported amazing locks. 
 
When I finally put brush to canvas, the piece came together fairly easily over a few sessions. The challenge was bringing some definition into that black mane without overworking it. I decided to sneak up on it a little at a time with first a basic block-in, and then in subsequent sessions very gently refining that with gentle purples, blues, and reds. I stopped before that mane got too fussy, and put in a relatively simple, cool background.
