About this oil:
This painting was inspired by an early morning hike. The sun was just beginning its rise on the eastern horizon, but the real show was in the full moon setting in the west. A few puffy clouds broke up the scene as the sky lit up into reds and pinks. The moon was a smudge of a bright spot behind a very high cloud deck, and the whole scene simply took my breath away. Back in the studio, I wanted to capture the magic of the scene without overworking it. The challenge was to keep the sky light and airy, while at the same time not going too intense on the color. At the end of my first painting session things were starting to take shape, but the painting still needed a bit more power. The next day I came in and darkened up the foothills a bit, and just that little added hint of contrast was all this piece needed to be "done."
