A beautiful Palomino catches the first rays of dawn on the Wyoming range. The colors of the horse in the warm morning light is what drew me to paint this scene.
If you're out on the western ranges at sunrise, you'll be treated to colors that you can't imagine in your wildest dreams. Bright blue or purple shadows set off almost neon yellows or oranges of the grasses and sagebrush. Distant hills might be bright pink or purple, and the sky is a multi-layered conglomeration of pinks and cobalt blue.
I wanted to capture all of these colors of the sunrise in this painting.
This is a palomino that I found at sunrise, out on the Wyoming ranges near the Flaming Gorge. In the high light of noon, this horse appears to be a more traditional palomino coloring, but in the morning his coat looked to be made of reds, oranges, and golds.
This is a small painting that has a big impact.
