About this oil:
As I was growing up in the farming areas of the Midwestern USA, I would stumble upon old homesteads during my days exploring the countryside. Some of these old homesteads had been abandoned for 75 years or more, and many times, all that was left were crumbled stone foundations and flowers. Usually I would see old varieties of hollyhocks among the old lilac bushes, antique irises, and old-fashioned roses. These homesteader hollyhocks were always single in flower, and shades of white, pink, and purple.
This particular batch of hollyhocks stood near an old church, and I was enchanted by the depths of purple and magenta visible in its blooms. I set those intense colors off against a light ochre/green background, and made sure to soften the edges of some of the petals. This made the flowers appear to be moving in a breeze.
Frame displayed is a sample frame only. I use frames from Catalina Frames in Tucson, Montgomery Frames in Mesa, or similar.
