About this oil:
In this painting, I wanted to capture the speed and elegance of one of the western USA's most iconic animals: the Pronghorn. I tried to keep the paint application fresh, light, and energetic while avoiding overworking it. In order to achieve the energy I wanted in the piece, I had to stop painting before I normally would, keeping the background simple and the brushstrokes on the animals loose.
Pronghorn, while not true antelope, did evolve their speed because of a very familiar predator: the cheetah. Yes, during the last Ice Age, cheetahs roamed the North American prairies and their prey were the Pronghorn (and similar animals). We no longer have wild cheetahs hunting on our grasslands here in North America, but the Pronghorn managed to survive.
