The inspiration for this piece has actually come over a series of years. Having attended a number of small-town events such as reigning competitions, cutting horse trials, dog trials, and rodeos, I have grown to appreciate what goes on behind the scenes even more than what's happening in the ring. Not only are these events well-organized, the competitors strive to be supportive of each other and genuinely interested in their compatriots' performances.
 
Here, a group of five cowboys take a break from their own competitions and watch others as they do their best to take home the prize. I wanted to highlight the calmness of both the horses and the cowboys, as well as the various colors and shapes that give this piece its interest.
