This painting is all about texture. From this horse's mane down through the rest of his body, layers upon layers of paint create depth and texture that give this painting an extra level of interest. 
 
I started off with a first layer of basic color. After that dried, I came in with thicker color in a drybrush technique, allowing each layer to dry before bringing in more paint. All of these layers create extra interest and depth in a painting that could otherwise be quite flat.
